Diane Brown QSM International day was held on Saturday 4th February 2018.
Flannels England Ladies lined up against New Zealand Ladies.
The test match was held at Cambridge Polo Club Leamington in Waikato. The Flannels England team for the 16 Goal match were captained by the highest rated female polo player Nina Clarkin (10 Goal). Alongside her gaining their first England caps were Alex James at number 1 playing of a Handicap of 0, Becky Clarke playing of 2 and finally Amanda Norman handicapped at 4. The New Zealand Silver Spurs team comprised of Renn Erceg, Maddy Rankin, Suzie Hamilton and Missy Brown at the back.
The 5 chukka match was played in perfect conditions, the immaculate field at Cambridge enabled the game to be fast and open making it exciting for the many spectators. It was not only the grounds, however, that made this match one of the most exciting to kick off 2018.
Flannels England were off to a flyer in the first Chukka with Nina Clarkin scoring three goals in quick succession, New Zealand came close during the Chukka however couldn’t quite get the ball through the posts. Nina continued her dominance in the preceding Chukkas, controlling the play effectively and running the game. Alex, Becky and Amanda blocked and worked hard off the ball buying Nina space and time to further increase England’s lead. The New Zealand girls came close time and time again, however, only managed a goal. A combination of missed opportunities and superb defending from Flannels England concluded the game at 7-1 to the Flannels England Ladies.
It has to be noted that the large winning margin didn’t reflect the competitiveness of the game. The game was fast, well fought and demonstrated the incredible skill and talent that is required in polo. Rightfully, Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded to Nina Clarkin and Best Playing Pony (BPP) also going to Nina with her pony ‘Cuba’.
At 10 Goals in Ladies Handicap, Nina Clarkin is at the top of her sport. Nina started playing polo aged just 6 in Pony Club Polo alongside her Siblings at Cirencester Park Polo Club; polo well and truly runs in the family.
Now she plays all around the world, but spends the majority of her time split between the UK and New Zealand, where her husband JP Clarkin, also an 8 goal professional polo player is from.
Fresh from victory in the inaugural Ladies Argentine Open, Nina carried over her incredible form to the Flannels England Test match where she showed why she is one of the best polo players in the world right now.
