We at Hurlingham Polo 1875 are proud to announce the signing of Nina Clarkin as a Global Brand Ambassador. Rated at 10 goals under the Ladies’ handicaps, Nina comes from a family steeped in polo history.
Nina’s father and uncle had the famous Foxcote and Stowell Park teams, winners of numerous high goal tournaments in the 70s and 80s. Her father Mark went on to be Chairman of the HPA and Nina, in her own right, has won the Cowdray Park Gold Cup as well as numerous other tournaments around the world.
Now splitting her time between the UK, New Zealand and wherever else in the world polo may take her, Nina is truly the epitome of “Authentically British. Absolutely International”.
How were you first introduced to polo and what inspired your love for the sport?
I first started playing polo when I was 6 years old in the local pony club, the Cotswold. I love playing a teamsport and I love the fast-paced, action-packed, adrenaline-filled nature of the game. However it is the ponies and the connection with them that is the icing on the cake.
As such a prominent name in the world of polo, is there any advice you’d give to young players aspiring to play at a 10 goal level?
I would encourage them to work really hard, both on themselves as an athlete and on their ponies. It takes a long time and big investment to grow a string of ponies that can take you where you want to go.
What would you love to see in the next 10 years from the polo community?
I would like to see more polo being played around the world and more people joining the sport allowing it to continue to grow. I would also like to see larger crowds at polo games and more games being streamed live and eventually televised.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions before a match?
I try very hard not to have any pre-game rituals or superstitions as I think it would be very easy to become a slave to these things, however my go to breakfast on a big game day is eggs on toast and I always feel that this gets me and my body into a “winning” frame of mind!
What do you have planned for the up and coming UK polo season?
I am starting with the 15 goal at Guards Polo Club with the Hurlingham 1875 team, and then I play the Dollar with the Foxcote Team. I am also playing the 10 and 6 goal and then all the ladies as well, so it should be pretty busy!
If you were to describe the sport of polo in three words, what words would you use?
Fast, fun and adrenaline-filled.
In a few words how would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is always changing. I spend a lot of my time in jeans, a t-shirt and a hoody or jumper when I am riding or around the ponies. Outside of the ponies I like to dress simply but I hope elegantly and I love an excuse to dress up!
What are you most looking forward to seeing from Hurlingham Polo 1875 (design/clothing wise)?
I am really looking forward to some great women’s playing white jeans. I find it so hard to find a pair that are comfortable, durable, and look good. I have tried a sample of the new whites and they are fantastic. I am also really looking forward to the new collection with great dress shirts and blazers.
We’re very excited to have you on board in designing perfect technical polo whites for ladies, why do you feel it’s so important to create this style of playing jeans that’s never been done before?
Ah, I pretty much answered this before! It is something that I have always struggled to find as fashion white jeans are just not comfortable enough or hard-wearing enough. The ones that are often don’t look or feel that good. I spend a lot of time in my whites and so it is essential for me to find the all elusive “perfect pair”
